I made the trek out to Brassard Greenhouses to buy some bedding out plants (way too early in the season) and asked for a recommendation for lunch. I thought I’d have to backtrack to Strathmore but I was told about Pete’s Cafe & Bakery in Cluny – I was told Pete makes tasty hamburgers and piles of hand cut french fries. While I’m a little bit confused about the actual name of the place, Pete’s name is in all of them! I’ve seen signs for: Pete’s Bakery, Pete’s Bakery & Confectionary Cafe and Pete’s Chicken on the Run. There doesn’t seem to be much info about Pete’s online, but I’m sure they’re open pretty regular hours. Their food menu is posted on a whiteboard in the store, and they have restaurant style menus to look through as well.
The bakery/restaurant is situated in the general store in downtown Cluny. There is a sign directing you into town if you don’t know where you’re going (like me…) and Pete’s Cafe was really easy to find, at the end of the road. COVID-19 has kind of messed with my ability to check things out – if I could have, I would have wandered around the store and asked more questions and chatted with Pete, but instead I paid through the plexiglass shield and waited outside in my vehicle for the food to be ready. The outside of the store is a little eclectic… but they have a couple picnic tables for those who want to eat outside and enjoy the sun. I actually would have done so if it weren’t a bit chilly.
I was told that Pete bakes everything in store – buns, pizza crust, donuts… so I wanted to try some things that showed off Pete’s baking skills. For lunch I ordered the beef dip (and ate it in a parking lot). I expected au jus but didn’t get any. Alas, the bread was fresh and soft, toasted with garlic butter and the beef was super tasty and plentiful. I loved that I got some crispy edges on the beef. Even without the dip my beef dip was really good!
I grabbed a couple chocolate cream donuts for Max and I. I ended up eating mine before I got home (don’t judge!). I thought the donuts were super delicious, albeit a little dry on the edges… The chocolate cream wasn’t too rich or chocolatey and the chocolate dip reminded me of bakery visits in my childhood. I would love to try these donuts fresh made!
If I ever get out east again I will definitely stop in to try something else off the menu. If you are heading out to Strathmore for any reason, drive a bit farther east and stop into Pete’s for a fresh-baked good, a burger or a pizza!

May 27, 2021 at 1:42 pmI recently moved to Cluny from Calgary and Pete’s is one the best places you will find. Nothing to look at from the outside but his food is brilliant. Burgers and fries with Gravy – best burgers you will ever have
